Our mission

The Black Creek Local Immigration Partnership is dedicated to bringing together service agencies, settlement workers, grassroots groups and newcomers in the community to put a spotlight on newcomer issues and to make services work better for newcomers settling in the Black Creek community.

What we do

In our focus groups with newcomers and settlement workers, we found that there were three areas that newcomers need the most help in: employment, language and being welcomed into the community. Newcomers have trouble finding careers in their fields of study and often get stuck in survival jobs. They cannot find adequate language training, and they need help finding grocery stores, housing, schools, and other basic amenities. Our whole mission is dedicated to addressing these needs to make Black Creek friendlier to newcomers.

What makes us different

The Black Creek LIP is more than just a collection of agencies in the community. The LIP is focused on putting new immigrants at the forefront of the Black Creek community agenda. Our purpose is to create a Settlement Strategy and Action Plan that will help agencies in the area to better address the needs of newcomers by working together to provide employment and language training, welcome newcomers better and to integrate our services to make them easier for newcomers to use.

What we’re working on now

We have completed our strategy aimed at tackling the three areas identified above, and are now exploring how to implement our plans of integrating services. The LIP has also had its Strategy and Action Plan approved, and is currently working on creating work plans that will guide its actions until March 2012. Some of these actions include holding a community meeting to discuss the details of the work plans, more newsletters, and creating a referral model which will better help newcomers find their way when accessing social services.
