YOUTH

The Delta Family Resource Centre is focusing on youth. With renewed capacities, we are in a better position than ever to engage, support and develop youth! Our youth strategy involves some key aspects, many of which are highlighted in the Guiding Principles section.

Mentorship related activities are a focus in 2010/11. With the Leaders’ Basketball League, the University/College Basketball Summer Camp and the youth action group S.W.A.A.G. already encompassing important aspects of mentorship we are well on our way. We know that mentorship, especially peer and local strategies, will affect youth in ways ‘programs’ and youth workers can’t. Peer and local mentors are accessible, relatable and real. They build capacities, enlighten perspectives, challenge perceptions, motivate, teach skills and embody opportunities that are within reach for our youth.

Representation of local youth on the youth Delta staff team is a priority and a practical way in which to engage and continue to support the community. We are committed to creating environments and spaces in which youth are relevant; where they feel that their words are meaningful and that their words will transcend in to action. We, the youth Staff are the ‘mobilizers’ of student interests’, pursuits, aspirations, visions, projects, etc. The staff advocates to local senior school administrators, canvasses organizations for space, networks with partners to realize synergies and in general, leverages power in key areas to support youth action.

2010/11 here we come! In the words of our SWAAG youth action group:

WE ARE HERE!
